Project Overview

Filoumoris is a flagship cultural preservation initiative committed to safeguarding and promoting the musical heritage of the Indian Ocean islands. This extraordinary archive was built over four decades (1979–2019) by Belgian sound engineer Philippe de Magnée, who recorded, curated, and digitized the work of hundreds of artists across the Indian Ocean region.

Now hosted and managed by IOIF, Filoumoris represents one of the most significant repositories of rare and traditional island music—including lost recordings, unpublished works, and evolving genres.

Purpose and Impact

Filoumoris makes the musical culture, the stories and voices of the Indian Ocean accessible, helping to preserve artistic expression and anchor the region’s diverse identities and resilience.

IOIF’s stewardship of this platform ensures that the legacy continues, with a vision to upgrade the platform’s infrastructure, improve access for users and researchers, and expand the educational and creative opportunities it provides.
