Project Overview
This research and development initiative focuses on the east-southeast region of Mauritius, a diverse and sensitive socio-ecological zone that spans from the Bambou mountain range to the island’s eastern coastline. The area is home to both large-scale economic actors such as sugar estates and real estate developers, and vulnerable communities whose livelihoods depend on agriculture and small-scale fisheries.
The project aims to establish a multi-stakeholder Working Group to explore how ancestral knowledge, traditional practices, and modern land and sea-based approaches can be mobilized to enhance community resilience in the face of environmental, economic, and social shocks.
Key Objectives
- Engage local stakeholders to assess current vulnerabilities affecting at-risk communities
- Identify effective and culturally rooted practices for resilience and adaptation
- Map opportunities for collaboration between traditional knowledge holders and scientific institutions
- Support inclusive development planning grounded in sustainability and equity
Outcome & Vision
Through a sustained participatory process, the project will create a practical framework that supports decision-makers, researchers, and community members in co-developing resilience strategies. It also aims to unlock access to resources, tools, and networks that reinforce local capacity to respond to present and future challenges.
